FAQ's

Is this product real wood? Can the tiles be installed outdoors?

Yes, all of our products are either reclaimed wood or recycled hardwood that we use to meticulously craft our mosaic wall panels with. Due to weather unpredictability and changes in temperature and moisture, we do not recommend exterior installation of wood panels or tiles.

Can the wood be installed on the ceiling?

Yes, however, we recommend that any ceiling applications be installed using construction adhesive AND pin-nailed fastenings (mechanically fastened).

Is there expansion & contraction of the wood?  What if the wood panels crack or warp from humidity or extra dry air?

The patent-pending backing material allows for the wood to expand and contract over time. With proper installation and a 72-hour acclimation period before installation, the wood will perform perfectly for years to come. Woodwöl reclaimed wood panels are aged and have existed for years in the extreme outdoor weather conditions of the west, and has already undergone extensive warping and changes. The 3D-Hardwood wall panels are solid wood scraps of different species, some of which are more prone to humidity levels than others. However, even for finished wood panels we only recommend installing them in interior areas with controlled temperature and humidity levels. The wood will continue to expand and contract over time so we recommend installing them with a tiny gap around the perimeter of the installation to help the wood have the space it needs for this natural occurrence.

Is there any reason to worry about wood tiles being a fire hazard, especially around fireplaces or cooktops?

Wood and wood panels should be used in areas that are not subject to extreme heat, cold, fire, or moisture. They are not recommended to be used as backsplashes or as wooden accents to sinks, tubs, or other areas that experience frequent moisture.  We suggest that all local fire codes and product manufacturer recommendations for required distances from combustible materials be strictly followed for heat sources such as fireplaces and cooktops. We can treat the wood with a non-toxic environmentally-friendly (no VOCs), fire retardant spray that can achieve a Class A rating for commercial and fire code required applications. This does not make the wood fireproof. It only reduces the smoke distribution in the event of a fire.

How much variation in size, texture, and color is expected in a batch of wood?

Wood is a natural product so there will be variations in color and texture. We work diligently on our product sourcing and manufacturing so that each piece has a consistent and desirable color blend. While no two tiles are the same, we strive to make our product resemble in color and textures the samples that we send, the project photos on our website and literature. We’re sure you’ll be happy with the flowing colors and textures of your final installation.

What happens if the wood or wood panels are cracked or warp?

Some wood will have cracks and slight cupping or bowing based on the state of the original wood. We suggest that you place these pieces somewhere in the middle of the project, and not on the ends or corners, simply to reduce visibility of these variations. The dark color of the backing to which the wood panels are adhered to will also reduce the visibility of any imperfections or gaps between tiles, although many of them should be negligible from the start.

Please contact us if you have a custom need or questions about how tiles will look after installation.

MAINTENANCE & ONGOING CARE

How do you clean the wood panels?

It is best to use water and a mild dish soap on a damp cloth for cleaning. For products that are finished, the coatings will help keep grease and other perishables from penetrating the wood. Abrasive cleaning products are not recommended as they could strip the wood of coating and colors.

Will the wood panels change in color over time?

Exposure to sunlight or variations in humidity may cause changes in color over time. This is not necessarily a defect, but a characteristic of the material. If you’re planning on using the materials in a particularly bright, naturally lit room, then it could be a good idea to consider your starting point, so you’ll start with a color that you’ll love even if it fades. Color finishes should not change in color.
