FAQ's

Is this product real wood? Can the tiles be installed outdoors?

Yes, all of our products are either reclaimed barnwood or recycled hardwood that we use to meticulously craft our mosaic wall panels with. Due to weather unpredictability and changes in temperature and moisture, we do not recommend exterior installation of wood panels.

Can the wood be installed on the ceiling?

Yes, however we recommend that any ceiling applications be installed using construction adhesive AND pin nailed (mechanically fastened).

Is there expansion & contraction of the wood?  What if the wood panels crack or warp from humidity or extra dry air?

Barnwood is aged and has existed for years in the extreme outdoor weather conditions of the West, and have already likely undergone most of the warping and changes possible. The 3D Hardwood wall panels are solid wood scraps of different species, some of which are more prone to humidity levels than others. However, even for finished wood panels we only recommend installing them in interior areas with controlled temperature and humidity levels. The wood will continue to move over time so we recommend installing them with a gap around the perimeter of the installation to help the wood have the space it needs for this natural occurrence. The patent pending backing material allows this to happen, and with proper installation and a 72 hour acclimation period before installation the wood will perform perfectly for years to come.

Is there any reason to worry about wood tiles being a fire hazard, especially around fireplaces or cooktops?

Wood and wood panels should be used in areas that are not subject to extreme heat, cold, fire, or moisture. We suggest that all local fire codes and product manufacturer recommendations for required distances from combustible materials be strictly followed for heat sources such as fireplaces and cook tops. We can treat the wood with a non-toxic environmentally friendly (no VOCs) fire retardant spray that can achieve a Class A rating for commercial and fire code required applications. This does not make the wood firePROOF. It only reduces the smoke distribution in the event of a fire.

How much variation in size, texture, and color is expected in a batch of wood?

Wood is a natural product so the character and beauty that comes from the products inherency can also be one of the harder expectations to set. We work diligently on our product sourcing and manufacturing so that each piece has a consistent and desirable color blend. While no two tiles are the same, we strive to make our product resemble in color and textures the samples that we send, the project photos on our website and literature.

What happens if the wood or wood panels are cracked or warp?

Some wood will have cracks and slight cupping or bowing based on the state of the original barnwood. We suggest that you place these pieces somewhere in the middle of the project, and not on the ends or corners, simply to reduce visibility of these variations. The dark color of the backing to which the wood panels are adhered to will also reduce visibility of any imperfections or gaps between tiles.

ORDERING DETAILS

Can different finishes be mixed together in one order?

Yes, different patterns and finishes can be placed in the same order.

We keep stock of our most popular pattern and color combinations, meaning a majority of orders ship within a few business days.  Please contact us directly for lead times on large orders or to check stock and confirm a lead time.

Are custom orders available?

In order to keep pricing competitive, we offer a limited and streamlined sample of tiles. This allows us to keep our lead times low. Our wood panels have been vetted in the market for over 6 years and we know the ones that look the best when installed. Custom orders are not available.

MAINTENANCE & ONGOING CARE

How do you clean the wood panels?

It is best to use water and a mild dish soap on a damp cloth for cleaning. For products that are finished, the coatings will help keep grease and other perishables from penetrating the wood. Abrasive cleansing products are not recommended.

Will the wood panels change in color over time?

Exposure to sunlight or variations in humidity may cause changes in color over time. This is not necessarily a defect, but a characteristic of the material. Color finishes should not change in color.
